What it is

A hydrofoil you power yourself

A pump foil is a small board on a hydrofoil. You run and jump off a dock, the foil lifts the board out of the water, and you keep it flying by pumping with your legs. It works on any calm, deep water.

Hard to learn

Linking pumps takes hundreds of attempts for most people. Coaching and good gear shorten that a lot.

Easy to start

The Foil Scoot adds a handlebar, so first-timers can get up and glide in their first session.

Flat water

Calm mornings at the dock are the best conditions. No wind forecast, no surf report.

How sessions run

Safety comes first

  • Helmet, impact vest and wetsuit on every rider
  • Small groups, one board in the water at a time
  • Safety briefing before anyone steps to the edge
  • You must be able to swim back to the dock in a wetsuit, more than once
  • Sober sessions only: no alcohol or drugs before or during
  • Waiver signed online before the day, never rushed at the dock
  • Riders under 18: a parent or guardian stays on site and watching for the whole session. No adult is ever alone with a minor.

Who's teaching

Tony Del Balso

A Peninsula pump foiler and windsurfer who rides the Redwood City and Foster City waterfront. In his first Foil Scoot session as a coach, a first-timer whose only board sport was skateboarding got up and pumped away from the dock.

Pump foiling is a young sport. Lessons are coached, small and hands-on. This is a new local business, launching once permits and insurance are in place.
